Fleas and ticks are the most common pests
affecting dogs, cats, and other pets. Ticks feed on the blood of animals and
humans by attaching their barbed mouth to the host and using sticky
secretions as well as crab-like legs to hold on. Ticks can transmit
illnesses such as Lyme disease to both people and pets. |

| * The ingredients to avoid are organophosphate insecticides (OPs) and carbamates, which are found in some flea and tick treatments. A treatment contains an OP if the ingredient list contains chlorpyrifos, dichlorvos, phosmet, naled, tetrachlorvinphos, diazinon, or malathion. If the ingredient list includes carbaryl or propoxur, the treatment contains a carbamate. For more information, you can refer to a report prepared by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) titled Poisons on Pets: Health Hazards from Flea and Tick Products. |
